I'm going on a picnic, and I'm bringing Chocolate Picnic Cake, what else?
Louise at Months of Edible Celebrations loves picnics so much, that once again this year, she's playing the International Picnic Game. Each letter of the alphabet has been taken by a different blogger who will post what they're bringing to the Perfect Picnic A-Z!
Want to find out about the history of the picnic? Be sure and read the story at Months of Edible Celebrations.
The picnic this year is filled with international recipes and posts. We're going to have fun! Check out all the recipes at all these different blogs, so you can have your own Virtual Picnic... or real!
CHOCOLATE PICNIC CAKE
There are many recipes for Chocolate Picnic Cake--some using box mixes, some from scratch, but I'm posting an easy one! The nice thing about this Chocolate Picnic Cake is that it travels so well. It doesn't have to be refrigerated, and you can actually make ahead and freeze. This is a variation on Mary Kennedy's Chocolate Kahlua Cake and my Double Chocolate Bundt Cake. They would all travel well to a picnic--virtual or real!!
1 (18 ounce) box Devil's Food or Dark Chocolate Cake mix (I use Duncan Hines)
1 package instant chocolate pudding mix
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup warm water
1- 1/2 cups 70% or higher dark chocolate (chopped) or dark chocolate chips
1 cup (16 oz) sour cream
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
1. Mix all ingredients together.
2. Pour into oiled and floured Bundt pan.
3. Bake at 350 for about an hour or until tooth pick comes out clean.
4. Dust with powdered sugar.

Thoughts in Progress
Cake recipes that start out with a box of cake mix always seem less intimidating to me. Thanks for sharing! This Chocolate Goddess is going to give it a try.
Endangered Species Chocolate
Monica, be sure and try the kahlua cake, too (there's a link). It's awesome!
I'm so glad there is a chocolate cake on our picnic - I'll be digging in for a slice - I have been quite interested in chocolate cakes with sour cream lately so this is right up my alley
Johanna, I had a comment on Facebook about this recipe (Networked blogs?) One thing that occurred to me is that last time I made it, I was out of sour cream, so I substituted Greek yoghurt. A little tangy, but it actually worked well. Of course, good full fat sour cream is great and makes it so moist. Try making it with the Kahlua...even better!
I'm reading this at breakfast-time and thinking how perfect it would be for this very moment! :)
Karen, it would be great for breakfast, and you can toast a slice, too!
OK I'm your newest follower. Found you through the picnic game. Your blog is about chocolate! How do I NOT follow?!
Welcome, Tamara, lots of chocolate!
Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate - I love the chocolate picnic cake and will definitely make it.
Yummy chocolate cake for our picnic, Janet. I bet it's really moist with not only the sour cream but the pudding! Bring it on!
Thanks goodness you're bringing this cake...I'm craving chocolate! It sounds absolutely delicious =)
Girlichef, yes we must have cake!!!
You have this chocolate thing down! Yum! I am so grateful for this picnic so I can not only find new fun recipes, but also great cooks like you! Thanks!
Chocolate cake is a must on a picnic especially one with sour cream in it. Delicious.
Be sure, I will be sitting close by.
wow what a yummy and delicious chocolate bundt cake.
This looks wonderful, and thank you for the mentioning the chocolate kahlua cake, you wouldn't believe how many requests I've had for that. Can't wait to try this picnic cake!
Mary, your Kahlua cake is a knock-out!
