OREO BLIZZARD: Copycat Dairy Queen Recipe

Wow! A Blizzard is hitting the East Coast today. Sending positive thoughts to all my friends and anyone else who needs them to get through this crazy storm! Since I'm all about chocolate, it got me thinking about "Oreo Blizzards." You know, the famous Dairy Queen sundae! Here's a simple copy cat recipe for the Oreo Blizzard with ingredients you probably already have. You'll love it. As always, use the very best ingredients. Hope you stay warm while you make this frozen dessert.

OREO BLIZZARD

Ingredients
4 cups vanilla ice cream
8 Oreo Cookies, double stuffed, broken into chunks (it's ok to use regular Oreos)
8 mini Oreo Cookies (topping) --but if you only have regular, chop them up into tiny pieces.

Directions
Put frozen vanilla ice cream that you've put into a mixing bowl. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes to soften slightly, but not melt.
Beat the ice cream: Using a hand mixer, beat the ice cream on medium speed until it becomes creamy but remains very thick (about 1-2 minutes). Avoid overmixing, (You don't want this to be too thin).
Fold in the Oreo chunks: Addbroken Oreo chunks to the bowl. Use a spatula to gently fold them into the ice cream until evenly distributed. Be careful not to overmix to keep the chunks intact.
Spoon into 2 serving cups. Top each with mini Oreos or chopped Oreos.

OREO RICE KRISPIES TREATS: National Cereal Day!

Today is National Cereal Day, so why not combine the two and make the ultimate cereal treat -- Rice Krispies Treats? Snap! Crackle! and Pop! They were very special at my house when I was growing up. We didn't have them a lot, but I loved them. I like this recipe because it takes it up a notch and adds chopped Oreos (you can use other cookies, too, but this is a chocolate blog!) Perfect, too, because yesterday was Oreo Day, so it's another two-for.

This quick and easy recipe for Oreo Rice Krispies Treats is from Kraft, the maker of Rice Krispies, and it only takes 10 minutes. O.K., this may not be the healthiest of treats, but its certainly delicious! You can always substitute your own puffed rice cereal, sandwich cookies, and homemade marshmallows. Happy National Cereal Day!

As I've mentioned many time, food companies often have fun recipes on their sites! Enjoy!

OREO RICE KRISPIES TREATS

3 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 pkg (10 oz.) JET-PUFFED Marshmallows
5 cups KELLOGG’S® RICE KRISPIES® cereal
16 OREO Cookies, coarsely chopped, divided

Press onto bottom of 13 x 9 inch pan sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle with remaining chopped cookies; press lightly into cereal mixture to secure. Cool completely before cutting into squares.

ONE BOWL OREO BROWNIES: National Oreo Day!

Oreo Ad: 1960
Today is Oreo Day! The Oreo is America's Favorite Cookie! This cookie debuted on March 6, 1912 by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco, now owned  by Kraft). The original Oreo was packaged as a Trio: the Mother Goose, the Veronese, and the Oreo Biscuit. Oreo was the most popular, and soon was a stand-alone, well as far as cookies go, because you always need milk with Oreos!

In 1921, Nabisco dropped 'Biscuit' from the name and called it 'Oreo Sandwich.' In 1948 it was called the 'Oreo Creme Sandwich' and today it's marketed as the Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie. Over the years there have been many variations -- Mini Oreos, Double Delight, Triple stuffed, Lemon-Cream, Chocolate Covered Mint Oreos, Halloween Oreos, Green Tea Oreos--even Oreo O's Cereal made by Post. For those who are interested in cookie history, the Hydrox chocolate sandwich cookie predated Oreos by four years. Read more here.

So how do you eat your Oreos? Do you dunk them? Do you open them and lick the filling and then eat the cookies?

I've posted scads of Oreo-based tasty treats here on DyingforChocolate. But here's an easy recipe for One Bowl Oreo Brownies. you'll love these!

STARBUCKS COPY-CAT OREO FRAPPUCCINO: National Frappé Day

Today is Frappé Day. Most of us have a frappé of one kind or another in our lifetime.

A frappé is an iced beverage that has been shaken, blended, or beaten to produce a foamy cold blended drink, often with whipped cream and toppings. Ice can be added before or after beating the coffee and adding other ingredients such as sugar, milk, vanilla, and sweet sauces. It really depends on what you are shaking or blending it in - a shaker, frappe maker, or blender. According to one source, an ice-crushing blender is better than a shaker for blending a frappe. Traditionally frappés are made with coffee, but you can make other frappé drinks with tea, juice, or hot chocolate.

The word Frappé comes from the French word Frapper - which means to slap, knock, or beat. Cold coffee drinks named "café frappé" go back to the 19th century.

Which leads me to the Italian term: Frappuccino. In the last few years, I've had numerous types of Frappuccinos at Starbucks, most with chocolate. Here's a recipe for Starbucks' Oreo Frappuccino I found on StarbucksSecretMenu.net There are several 'Starbucks" secret menu recipes that you can order at Starbucks (you may need to know the recipe), but you can also make this at home. As always use the very best chocolate.

Starbucks CopyCat Oreo Frappucino

Ingredients
8 ounces whole milk
1 cup ice
2 scoops vanilla bean ice cream
2 Tbsp semisweet chocolate chips
1 Tbsp mocha syrup or chocolate syrup
1 Oreo
Whipped cream, for garnish
Crushed Oreos, for garnish

Directions
In a blender add milk, ice, vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate chips, mocha syrup, and an Oreo.
Blend until smooth. Pour into a glass, and garnish with whipped cream and crushed Oreos.

OREOS: Oreo History, Truffles, and More: National Oreo Day!

So how do you eat your Oreos? Do you dunk them? Do you open them and lick the filling and then eat the cookies? Or do you just bite and chew?

I've posted scads of Oreo-based tasty treats here on DyingforChocolate.com. But here's an easy recipe for Oreo Truffles -- recipe from Kraft. You'll find similar recipes all over the Internet. This is so easy, and you'll only need Three Ingredients: Oreos, Cream Cheese, and Chocolate. Yum! I substitute fair trade organic dark chocolate for the Baker's, but if you don't have any, Baker's is fine.

OREO TRUFFLES

Ingredients
1 pkg. (8 ounces) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
1 pkg. (15.5 ounces) Oreo Cookies, finely crushed (about 4-1/4 cups), divided
2 pkg. (8 squares each) Baker's Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted

Directions
Mix cream cheese and 3 cups cookie crumbs until well blended.
Shape into 48 (1-inch) balls. Dip in melted chocolate; place on waxed paper-covered baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining cookie crumbs.
Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator.

Hint: for Dipping, use two forks to make it easier (and less messy) or a special dipping utensil you can find online or at a kitchen store. I melt chocolate in a double boiler, but if you're careful, you can melt it in the microwave.

And what are Oreos without a cold glass of milk?

OREO PUDDIN' POKE CAKE: National Oreo Day!

Today is National Oreo Day. Oreos are the best selling cookie in the world with more than 450 million Oreo cookies sold since they were created. They are also found in over 100 countries. There are multiple flavors of Oreos, not counting seasonal varieties. Nabisco got the idea from Hydrox which made its debut in 1908, four years before Oresos were placed on store shelves. It wasn't until 1997 that Oreos became kosher when the lard was removed. Oreos are vegan. The 'cream' doesn't contain any dairy.

So to celebrate, I have a recipe for one of the easiest cakes to make, a Poke Cake, aka Puddin' Poke Cake. And for today's holiday that would be an Oreo Puddin' Poke Cake! Obviously this is a very moist cake. A poke cake is usually made with a boxed cake mix and a pudding mix. You poke holes in the cake after it's been baked, but still warm, and you pour the pudding over it. How easy is that? Very Retro!

You'll probably find you have some or all the ingredients for this Oreo Puddin' Poke Cake in your cupboard and fridge. Once you try this, I can guarantee you'll make this more than once. Some people add cool whip as a topping before adding more crushed Oreos, but I don't, but I posted the option below.

OREO PUDDIN' POKE CAKE

Ingredients
1 Box Chocolate Cake Mix and (eggs, oil and water for the cake mix)  I like Duncan Hines
2 (4 ounce) packages of Instant Oreo pudding
4 cups whole milk
Bag of Oreo Cookies, chopped or crushed (use the whole bag)

Directions
Make cake mix according to directions (but add a cup of the chopped oreos to batter). Bake according to directions in well-greased 9 x13 pan.
Just before cake is done, start making pudding.
In medium bowl, add milk to pudding mixture and continue to whisk until most of lumps are removed. Let pudding mixture sit for about 2 minutes. Thicken slightly but don't let it get too runny or too thick.
When cake is finished, while still warm, quickly poke holes all over top of cake, about 1-inch intervals using chopsticks, bottom of a wooden spoon, or straw.
Pour pudding mixture all over warm cake. Top with 1/2 the chopped Oreos.
Put cake in refrigerator to cool. About an hour.
Once Oreo Poke Cake is set, top with rest of crushed or chopped Oreo cookies (or at this point you can add a container of Cool Whip--once cake is completely cooled-- and then add the rest of the chopped Oreos)
Keep cake refrigerated.

MICKEY MOUSE BIRTHDAY OREOS: Happy Birthday, Mickey!

Happy Birthday, Mickey! Today Mickey Mouse is 91 years old. Last year on Mickey's 90th birthday, Oreo released Limited-Edition Birthday Cake Flavor cookies. Not sure they're still making them, but I did see them for sale on Amazon and eBay. What's the shelf-life of Oreos?

Mickey Mouse made his debut in the Disney cartoon Steamboat Willie on November 18, 1928. The Oreo Birthday Cake Flavor Cookies have cake-flavored creme filling with fun colored spriknles and the chocolate wafers have three different designs: one with the mouse wearing a party hat and the others are a party horn and the number 90. The packaging is also a retro-styled image of Mickie that harkens back to Steamboat Willie.

COOKIES 'N CREAM OREO CAKE ROLL: Post by Judy Clemens-Smucker

I love when my mystery and chocolate worlds collide. Today I welcome back Judy Clemens-Smucker aka JC Lane aka Judy Clemens. J.C. Lane is the author of the thriller Tag, You’re Dead. She also writes mysteries as Judy Clemens, including the Stella Crown series and the Grim Reaper mysteries.

JUDY CLEMENS:

Like many households, mine loves the Great British Baking Show. We watch the bakers assemble their creations and wish we could taste each and every one. (Well, maybe not every one. Those Victorian game pies never look as appealing to me as they do to the contestants and judges.) One of our favorite weeks on the show is when they do the cake rolls. It’s fun to see the flavors they put together, marrying the cake with the filling, and see how they decorate the finished product.

This Cookies ‘n Cream Oreo Cake Roll may not have orange zest, candied walnuts, or spun sugar webs, but it has yummy cream, a soft cake (or “sponge” as they’d say on the GBBS), and a delectable ganache topping. Here are some of the quotes from my family when I served it:

“You got such a nice shine on the ganache!”
“The spiral is nice and tight, with no gaps.”
“The cake has such a nice texture.”

So, there you go, Paul Hollywood. I’m ready for the show!

Cookies ‘n Cream Oreo Cake Roll

FOR THE CAKE:
3 large eggs
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp brewed coffee (or water)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 Tbsp baking powder
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
Powdered sugar, to aid in rolling

FOR THE FILLING:
3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
1 Tbsp powdered sugar 1 t vanilla extract
12 Oreos, crushed

FOR THE GANACHE:
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions
1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Line a jelly roll pan (10” x 15”) with foil. Grease and flour foil.
2. Make the cake: Beat eggs at high speed for 3 minutes, until frothy and dark yellow. Beat in sugar, coffee or water, and vanilla extract.
3. Whisk together cocoa, salt, baking powder, and flour. Stir into wet ingredients just until blended.
4. Spread in prepared pan. Batter will be in a very thin layer. Use spatula to spread it to all corners of the pan. Bake for 12-15 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when you lightly poke the top with your fingertip and it bounces back slightly.
5. While the cake is baking, set a clean kitchen towel on a large work surface. Sprinkle liberally with powdered sugar (about ¼ cup). As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, turn it over onto the kitchen towel. Remove foil carefully.
6. Trim crusty edges, then, working from the short end, fold the edge of the towel over the cake. Roll tightly, rolling up the cake into the towel. Let cool completely while rolled at least one hour (or you can wrap it overnight).
7. Make the filling: Beat heavy whipping cream. Slowly add in powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat until whipped cream forms. Stir in crushed Oreos, reserving 2 T for garnish.
8. Assemble cake: Once the cake has cooled, unroll it carefully. Spread the whipping cream on the cake, leaving 1” without filling at either end. Re-roll cake. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least one hour before frosting.
9. Make the ganache: Place chocolate chips and cream in a microwave safe bowl. Heat on high power for 60-90 seconds or until the cream is hot. Whisk until smooth. Let cool for 10 minutes.
10. Place cake roll on a wire rack set over a cookie sheet. Pour the ganache over the cake evenly, scooping up what falls on the cookie sheet and re-pouring until you have it as covered as possible. Top with remaining crushed Oreos. Chill until set.
11. Note: The cake should stay chilled until right before serving or the whipped cream filling will get warm and it will be hard to slice.

OREOS: History, Truffles, and More: National Oreo Day!

Oreo Ad: 1960
Happy Birthday, Oreo! Today is National Oreo Day!

In 1921, Nabisco dropped 'Biscuit' from the name and called it 'Oreo Sandwich'. In 1948 it was called the 'Oreo Creme Sandwich' and today it's marketed as the Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie.  Over the years there have been many variations -- Mini Oreos, Double Delight,  Triple stuffed, Lemon-Cream, Chocolate Covered Mint Oreos, Halloween Oreos--even Oreo O's Cereal made by Post. For a much more complete  history of Oreos go to Months of Edible Celebrations' 2008 post. For those who are interested in cookie history, the Hydrox chocolate sandwich cookie predated Oreos by four years. Read more here.

So how do you eat your Oreos? Do you dunk them? Do you open them and lick the filling and then eat the cookies?

Chocolate Bytes: Swedish Fish Oreos

This week, Nabisco announced the newest Oreo flavor: Swedish Fish Oreos. This oreo has rebright red Swedish Fish gummy candy replace the traditional white creme filling.

"We know that consumers enjoy variety when it comes to snacking so we create all of our limited-edition flavors to provide surprising new twists people know and love and on occasion, create unexpected and unique flavor combinations that people may never have thought were possible," an Oreo spokesperson told Business Insider on Wednesday.

The flavor, however, has left quite a few Oreo fans scratching their heads on social media. Food blog The Impulsive Buy began its review with the "Jurassic Park" quote "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

The food blog wasn't impressed with the new Oreo filling. "This creme isn't perfectly pillowy, soft, and squishy," The Impulsive Buy wrote. "It's a little more sticky, chewy, and dare I say...slimy. It cracks and falls apart like a child's Play-Doh diorama of the Berlin Wall."

"The creme's taste is just like Swedish Fish," The Impulsive Buy added. "It has potent, puckering pops of candied cherry and a slightly off-putting finish of waxy gelatin. I really wanted to like Swedish Fish Oreo, but the 'crispy fruit medicine puree' textural contrast is too much for even a quasi-licensed gummy-ologist."

I haven't tried it yet, but I will soon. It doesn't really appeal to me, although I love Swedish Fish, and I love Oreos. Just not together! Meanwhile, Oreo fans can judge for themselves when the new cookie flavor lands only at Kroger stores, though some stores are already selling them online.

Oreo Cheesecake

Yesterday I saw a huge transport truck with Oreo cookies emblazoned all over it. 6' tall Oreos. So in honor of this sighting, I thought I'd post a recipe for Oreo Cheesecake. This recipe combines two of my favorite food groups! Oreos and Cheesecake. O.K., a little liberty there on actual food groups. But, the great thing about this recipe is it's quick and easy. No bake! Chocolate Bytes: Multicultural Oreos

Had to share this article about Oreos that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle today.

Whether it's green tea Oreos in China, a chocolate and peanut variety in Indonesia, or banana and dulce de leche Oreos in Argentina, a lot rides on Kraft's efforts to develop alternatives to the iconic cookie-and-cream combination. The 100-year-old sandwich cookie, a $2 billion brand, is going global in a big way. Emerging markets will account for about half of Oreo sales this year; over the past five years, emerging markets including Asia and Latin America have been the major drivers of the brand's growth. Thanks to the overseas push, overall Oreo sales grew nearly 25 percent in 2011.

Let me know what flavor you would fancy.

Home made Oreo Cookies

Although I'm a fan of high quality chocolate, I'm still a sucker for the standard cookie fare of chocolate sandwich cookies. Oreos are just about the most popular cookie in America. I'm a Hydrox fan myself, and I was glad to see that Kelloggs revived Hydrox cookies. Here's a Blog dedicated to my favorites: Hydrox Cookies. The official Hydrox site can be found here.

Want to try making a variation on these cookies at home? They won't be the same as Hydrox or Oreos, but they're really delicious. I found this recipe on the Food Network website. It comes from Trois Pommes Patisseries in Brooklyn, so if you can't or won't bake, you can always stop by the patisserie for these delicious treats.

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Yield: 32 cookies

INGREDIENTS
For the Dough:

1 1/3 cups cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Filling:

1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Prepare the dough: Sift together the cocoa powder, flour and salt in a large bowl.

Using a mixer, cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla, incorporating each ingredient before adding the next. Add the dry ingredients and mix just until incorporated, scraping the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula.

Divide the dough into 2 pieces; place one piece between 2 lightly floured sheets of parchment paper and roll into a 1/4-inch-thick rectangle. Repeat with the other piece of dough. Refrigerate both rectangles, covered with the parchment sheets, until firm, at least 1 hour or up to several days.

Using a 2-inch round cutter, cut the dough into 64 circles. (You can reroll the scraps once.) Place the cookies about 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets and chill for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

Bake the cookies until they are set and slightly darker around the edges, about 20 minutes. Cool completely on wire racks.

Meanwhile, prepare the filling: Using a mixer, cream the butter and shortening until fluffy. Beat in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla.

Flip half of the cookies upside down and top each with 1 level tablespoon of filling. Press the remaining cookies on top to make sandwiches.
