First-Prize Buttermilk Fudge Cake: Carnation's Easy-Does-It-Cookbook

I love old cookbooks, don't you? Several years ago I found a tiny cookbook, Carnation's Easy-Does-It Cookbook, by Mary Blake (1958), at the Alameda Flea Market. It's filled with helpful tips and recipes. Some are a bit dated, and the assumption is that the "little woman's in the kitchen," but it's a real blast from the past. Be sure and scroll down for an easy recipe for First-Prize Buttermilk Fudge Cake!

Chocolate Lime Swirl Pie: Retro Ad & Recipe

I love all these Retro Ads & Recipes. Some are better than others. Visually they don't always match our 2017 sensibilities, but taste-wise they often do. As always, you can substitute higher quality ingredients to create the very best dessert. Jelly powder, by the way, is jello..you can actually use green jello in this recipe, and not add the food coloring. Here's a blast from the past from Carnation for Chocolate Lime Swirl. As the ad reads: No cooking, No baking. How easy is this? Don't want to make this? Just enjoy the Retro Ad!

Toasted Almond Truffles: Retro Ad & Recipe

This Retro Carnation/Nestle Advertisement from 1985 is for Toasted Almond Truffles. They're so easy to make. Of course, you can substitute a different chocolate in the recipe. Personally I prefer dark chocolate in these truffles.

TOASTED ALMOND TRUFFLES

Ingredients
1/2 cup undiluted CARNATION Evaporated Milk
1/4 cup sugar
One 11 1/2 oz. pkg. (2 cups) NESTLE Milk Chocolate Morsels
1/2 to 1 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup finely chopped almonds, toasted

Directions
Combine evaporated milk and sugar in small heavy-gauge saucepan. Cook over medium heat until mixture comes to a full rolling boil. Boil 3 minutes; stir constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in morsels and almond extract until morsels melt and mixture is smooth. Chill 45 minutes. Shape into 1-inch balls. Roll in almonds. Chill until ready to serve. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen truffles.

1-2-3 Hot Fudge Sauce: National Hot Fudge Sundae Day

Today is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day! I really like Hot Fudge Sauce on cold ice cream.

This Retro Ad & Recipe for 1-2-3 Fudge Sauce is from Carnation Evaporated Milk, September 7, 1953. You can follow the recipe, or you can make your own. I just love these vintage ads, don't you? So here's a way to beat the heat! I would use 4 squares, of course.. and probably substitute some excellent artisan chocolate!
