Today is National Salami Day, and if you've been reading this Blog, you know there's such a thing as a Chocolate Salami (May 7, 2009). It's completely vegetarian, although not vegan. However, my friend Louise at Months of Edible Celebrations, not only told me about today's holiday, but led me to a website with a totally different recipe for a chocolate salami from Italian Kitchen Secrets. Why not make both? Try them on family and friends and let me know what you think.
Chocolate Salami Dessert (Salame al cioccolato)
Ingredients:
3 ounces cocoa powder
1/2 ounce hazelnuts
3 1/2 ounces sugar
2 1/2 ounces butter, softened
5 ounces digestive biscuits (plain ones)
1 egg + 1 yolk
powdered sugar
Bake hazelnuts in the oven until they're toasted, break them into little pieces.
Put biscuits in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin: they must be well broken but not completely pulverized.
Whip the egg and yolk, mix them with sugar until blended.
Add cocoa powder and butter and mix again very well.
Add hazelnuts and biscuits, mix until everything is well blended.
Pour the mixture onto a big baking sheet or board with parchment paper, give it the shape of a big salami and put in the fridge for at least 3-4 hours.
Before serving take off the paper and powder the dessert with powdered sugar, then slice it and serve.
Don't forget to check out the other recipe for Chocolate Salami. It contains Port wine, almonds, cranberries and pistachios. I think the pistachios give it a 'genuine' look.
