A bouquet of flowers, perhaps; a bottle of wine if you're invited to a party or supper; cook-- erm, sorry, Catriona, I mean: biscuits -- or a cake ... I always thought it a lovely and gracious gesture. My parents, when we first came to the U.S., had to get used to the idea their host(s) looked at them funny when they did that.
