5 minute Chocolate Cake in a Mug

My friend Janet Appel sends me chocolate recipes from time to time, and they're all great. So last week she sent me her Papa Jack's recipe for Five Minute Chocolate Cake in a Mug. How decadent is that? She says Papa Jack wasn't much of a baker, so he must have found this recipe somewhere. Whatever the source, it works, and since he makes it routinely, I thought I'd post.

FIVE MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional -but not if you're a chocoholic)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well..
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

What ounce size mug? And the egg gets thoroughly cooked?

thanks,
Jeanne

good questions. The egg does get cooked. Any large mug would work, but I'll also check with Janet A (and her Papa)

This recipe looks great, but what if you don't want to use a microwave? Can you use an oven? Will this hurt the mug or should something else be used? Also, it might take longer in an oven, but how long? Sorry for all of the questions.

AMC - If you're going to use a conventional oven, then go ahead with a regular recipe and make cupcakes.... hmm?

I used self rising flour and that got rid of the flat taste. I also used a big cereal bowl with straight up sides. When it was finished in the micro, I ran a spatula around the sides and turned it out onto a plate. Then, I got creative and pierced it with a fork every 1/2" and poured 3 tablespoons of Kahlua over it. Cut into wedges and top each serving with whipped cream. This makes a great 'date cake' to wow your man with a choclate quickie..... smiles.

I tried and did an experiment with mixing some nutella inside and after 3 minutes in the microwave it started to burn from inside, like a vulcano... I had to put it under water to stop the fire.

Anonymous, did you leave out any of the ingredients? Nutella has a different consistency. Especially with cakes in the microwave, you shouldn't vary ingredients. Sory you had a volcano. Wonder what's in nutella that would do that...more oil?

I have read on another blog where someone suggested using nutella as a frosting... sounds like a good idea if you like nutella

Didn't come out like I thought it would but it was okay. Mine seemed like it was too rubbery and the chocolate chips just stuck at the bottom.

It sort of pudding like/cake like..did you mix the chocolate chips with the other ingredients?

It is very good but it needs to cool for 2 hours.

What kind of dry ingredients should their be... and how much??

Cool, i'll try this

do we need baking powder for this?

Janet Rudolph said...

No baking powder :-)... it's a quick cooking chocolate treat!

Hi just made it god its lush i do suggest smothering it in cream or ice cream as the texturecan be a little dry but if you eat it all as soon as it comes out of the ping an ding you won't have any problems. i used a mix of cocoa and drinking chocolate that takes of the bitter edge, and self raising flour also gets red of the heavy stodge as you may have guessed I've eaten quite a few of these now Haha reckon there'd be a way to have different flavour for those who needsomething lighter.. strawberry, raspberry or lemon perhaps??

i followed all the instructions but the cake came out chewy n a bit hard...is it suppose to be like that? if not what did i do wrong?

Probably too long in the microwave. Some of the temperatures are off on the new ones.. well they work just fine but they're not in watts on the controls
